BACKSTORY. Fifty years ago, a top-secret project known as "Project Shadow" began on the Space Colony ARK with the intention of researching immortality and curing incurable deadly illnesses. Lead by Professor Gerald Robotnik, it was a government-sanctioned initiative to create 'the ultimate creature', an immortal being that Gerald hoped could be used for the benefit of the world. After creating the prototype, Gerald and his team were able to successfully create the finalized creature: Shadow the Hedgehog.However, their activities attracted military and law enforcement organization GUN's attention and Project Shadow was deemed as a threat to humanity. As a result, they launched an invasion of the ARK to put a stop to the work being done there. Everyone and everything related to the project was eliminated and while Shadow managed to escape the ARK thanks to his best friend Maria Robotnik, he was eventually captured and put into stasis.Fifty years later, Shadow was awakened from hibernation by Gerald's grandson, Doctor Eggman. Initially, Shadow's goal was to destroy the Earth and avenge Maria's death; but he ultimately decided to save humanity, which almost cost him his life.

PERSONALITY. Shadow is very quiet and reserved, usually not the type to start a conversation unless there’s something to get from it. He’s difficult to figure out as he rarely talks about his own feelings and opinions. And while Shadow can be a bit cruel and intimidating, it’s only because he tries to distance himself from essentially everyone with few exceptions: he doesn’t think someone like him should have any friends. Surprisingly, he is very soft spoken and loyal to people he knows he can trust.After finally realizing his true purpose and freeing himself from the chains of his past, Shadow dedicates his life to his promise to Maria. He's willing to do anything to protect the planet she loved so much and has absolute refusal to give up in any of his missions. Despite this, he holds a very cynical view of humanity and usually avoids interacting with them unless he has to. He thinks humans are selfish and would rather not bring attention to himself as he knows most humans aren't very fond of him either. He's a quiet protector who wants no glory or recognition for his heroic acts.Due to having a traumatic past, Shadow suffers from PTSD which sometimes causes him to have flashbacks and dissociate from reality. Being reminded of his past or being questioned about his identity can trigger him and it can be dangerous for anyone to approach him while he's dissociating, because there's a chance he will not recognize you and instead sees you as a threat.POSITIVE TRAITS. resolute, loyal, adaptable, confident, observant

PRE-GAMES: The 24th attempt at creating the Ultimate lifeform was successful! He's a blank state, almost emotionless until he met a girl who would become his best friend. Maria taught Shadow to speak and he quickly become very well-mannered and passionate about helping others. Shadow spent his days aboard the Space Colony ARK, learning about the planet Earth and training his powers. The scientists would often perform tests on him, some of which were quite painful, but he endured and always looked forward to when he got to spend time with Maria.
Unfortunately the happy days didn't last long. One day, GUN raided the ARK and as everything turned to chaos, Maria sacrificed herself to help Shadow escape before she was shot and died.
Injured from his escape pod crashing to Earth, Shadow was eventually found by GUN and put in stasis. Meanwhile Gerald who was also captured, slowly descended to madness. All he could think about was how to avenge his poor granddaughter.
Project: Shadow became a crucial part of Gerald's insane plan to destroy the world and he spends his last days secretly reprogramming Shadow's body and mind. After the project's completion, Gerald was executed and GUN decided Shadow would be sealed away.
SONIC ADVENTURE 2: 50 years later, Shadow was freed from his stasis by Gerald's grandson, Eggman, who was quickly manipulated by Shadow to collect the seven Chaos emeralds and to meet him aboard the abandoned Space Colony ARK. Things escalated and Shadow had put into motion Gerald's world destruction plan and planned to use the ARK's Eclipse Cannon to destroy the Earth completely, all because he thought revenge for Maria's death was the only thing that mattered. Just as things were about to look hopeless, Amy Rose spoke to Shadow and managed to convince him that there are good people living on the planet who deserve a chance to be happy. Her words reminded Shadow of Maria's last moments and her true wish, which was to protect the planet. Now horrified of his actions, Shadow sought to redeem himself and joined Sonic in the final battle in his newly founded Super form. Afterwards, exhausted and delirious, Shadow fell down towards the planet despite Sonic's efforts to save him. He was presumed dead.
SONIC HEROES: When Shadow fell down to Earth in SA2, he was eventually found and saved by Eggman’s robots who took him to a secret base. Unconscious and barely alive, he had to be put in a stasis capsule because of his injuries. For months he was sleeping and guarded by E-123 Omega. When Rouge accidentally woke him up, he had lost all of his memories. But despite having very little knowledge of what was going on, he decided to join Team Dark in an attempt to track down Eggman.

SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG: Frustrated because Eggman wouldn't give him any answers, Shadow felt there was nothing he could do to make himself remember his past.. or if he's just a copy of 'Shadow the Hedgehog.' He's haunted by a memory of a girl, a long hallway and a gunshot that makes his blood run cold. Things take a turn when the Black Comet arrives, and the leader of Black Arms promises him all the answers to his past if he'll collect all the Chaos Emeralds for him. It all feels.. so very convenient. Not sure who to trust anymore, Shadow begins his quest to find all seven emeralds and along the way he recovers parts of his memories and realizes what humans did to him. Almost tempted to give into his anger, he changes his mind after watching a video tape from Maria & Gerald that the Chaotix had managed to recover. This gives him the power to resist Black Doom's mind control and he uses his Super form to destroy him and the Black Comet, saving humanity once again. Finally, Shadow feels he could put his past behind him and dedicate himself to keeping Maria's wish alive.
SONIC 06: The events of 06 have been completely removed from existence thanks to Sonic's and the princess of Soleanna's efforts, meaning Shadow remembers nothing about what happened.
SONIC UNLEASHED: Shadow worked with GUN and helped evacuate civilians when the planet was split in pieces. He never ran into Sonic when he was in his Werehog form, so he knows very little about what happened to him. All he knows is that some people talked about a ‘wolf’ who saved them from Dark Gaia’s minions and that Sonic had found a way to piece the planet back together.
SONIC COLORS DS: Shadow went to investigate the amusement park Eggman had built in space, suspicious of the Doctor’s true intentions. He collected data with Omega on various locations of the park and found out Eggman was enslaving the Wisps. He shared this information with Sonic & Tails, and trusted them to ruin Eggman’s plans. Meanwhile he and Omega focused on freeing as many Wisps as possible by destroying different parts of the park.
SONIC GENERATIONS: Shadow was also sucked into the weird, colorless dimension called ‘White Space’ and there he managed to find the yellow Chaos Emerald before running into Sonic. He gave the emerald, a bit reluctantly, to the blue hedgehog after he beat him in a battle. After that he gathered with Sonic’s other friends to cheer on Sonic & his Classic self when they fought against the Time Eater.
